Framebridge Is Using the Acrylic From Its Frames to Make Protective Face Shields

If you loved Framebridge for its multitude of framing options, you're about to have another reason to support the startup: It's now helping in the coronavirus relief effort. Joining brands like Benjamin Moore, which is making hand sanitizer, and flooring company Mohawk Industries fashioning hospital gowns, Framebridge is stepping up to produce PPE for essential workers on the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis.

The custom framing company shifted from manufacturing frames in its Richmond, Kentucky, factory to producing thousands of transparent full-face shields daily. Framebridge's operations team drew up a design that repurposes the acrylic traditionally used for the front of a frame to create a sturdy, yet lightweight, halo-shaped headpiece. The Halo Face Shield, as it has been named, costs $4.50 per unit. It consists of two parts: the acrylic halo headpiece and the clear film shield, which is made from a non-porous polycarbonate material. The headpiece can be detached from the shield for easy cleaning. Not to mention, a replacement shield can be purchased for just $0.80. As Framebridge writes on its blog: “Shields have adhesive masking on both sides to ensure sterile transport,” making this a reliable gear for frontline workers.

As the acrylic in the Halo Face Shield may become uncomfortable on the head, Framebridge also offers a Foam & Elastic face shield, which includes a padded velcro headpiece. This shield is $9.50 per unit; however, replacement shields are not available for that model.

Framebridge notes that the factory has scaled production in order to yield thousands of face units a day. “We want to connect with the organizations in greatest need of this PPE.” If you know a group in need of PPE, the shields can be ordered by emailing ppe@framebridge.com.
