Fox News Tried and Failed to Shame Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Worrying About D.C. Rent

"It is bizarre to see 1%-salaried anchors laugh at the US housing crisis."

Now that the election is over, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is officially the youngest woman ever and the first socialist in decades elected to the House of Representatives. And for someone from a working class background who was formerly working as a bartender, the move to D.C. can be daunting at times. In a recent lengthy interview, she told the New York Times that the transition to being in Congress and the move to D.C. was “very unusual, because I can’t really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.”

Moving to one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. is hard even if you've got a salary and weren't working as a bartender before taking a hiatus to run for Congress. But the compassionate folks at Fox News—ever-obsessed with Ocasio-Cortez's comings and goings—thought that the comment was either a political ploy or a hilarious example of her being too dumb to budget. Per NBC News:

Fox News contributor Judy Miller called it "a brilliant political line" that will play well with her base, but also admitted that the cost of living in Washington, D.C., is expensive.

"I think what she's talking about is all of the money in Washington, all of the wealth in Washington, all of the power and a little, simple person like her from New York can't find a place to live,” Miller said.

Fox News correspondent Ed Henry slammed Ocasio-Cortez on the panel, suggesting that she could have been saving her money rather than embracing her newfound celebrity.

"Some of those (photo) shoots she had during the campaign, she had these multi-thousand dollar outfits that could pay a month's rent in Washington, D.C.," he said.

Twitter users were quick to point out that, first of all, no one gets to keep the outfits they wear in a photo shoot, and, second of all, what the hell is so funny about how expensive rent is?

But Ocasio-Cortez doesn't seem to need anyone to come to her defense, tweeting, "It is bizarre to see 1%-salaried anchors laugh at the US housing crisis." She added:

This isn't the first time Fox personalities have told on themselves while trying to tear down political opponents. Sometimes they get so invested in the attack, they may forget they have an audience beyond Donald Trump.
