4 Yahoo Staffers on their Signature ‘Power Looks’
We’ve spent the past two weeks exploring power looks — what it means to designers, celebrities, influencers from plus size to petites, and what kinds of power staples we need in our wardrobes. A power look to the presidential candidate is a pantsuit, while a power look to pop singer Yuna is her headscarf, and to curvy model Felicity Hayward, a power look comes in the form of a latex jumpsuit. Of course, while a latex jumpsuit is all well and good after hours, it’s arguably more important to feel empowered and confident while at the office. So what makes a power look at work? We asked four Yahoo staffers about the pieces that help them project power and personality in their 9 to 5.

Andy Serwer, Editor-in-Chief, Yahoo Finance
Yahoo Finance Editor-in-Chief Andy Serwer is not your average finance-looking kind of dude. His signature everyday look is more of a hipster dad than Brooks Brothers-clad, Wall Street fat cat. Often seen in a denim shirt with dark jeans and blue suede shoes, Serwer’s power look here is a pair of tailored dark navy pants with a button-down and a denim jacket and a pair of gray suede desert boots, proving to us all that power is not about what is expected of your title but more about the charisma to carry it off.

Laura Kenney has the job of managing the Yahoo Style & Beauty team, so not only does she look after a team of over a dozen people, she is also mother to three young kids, with the youngest being less than 1 year old. Kenney is constantly in meetings, so looking professional is important so her signature look every day, either a dress or a blouse with a skirt. Wearing a polka-dot tie-front blouse with a three-quarter length pencil skirt, she finishes off the look with a pair of open-toe heels to elevate her whole outfit and to separate the mom from the managing editor.

Writer and reporter Melody Hahm is often on air, interviewing CEOs of companies from major corporations to startups on Yahoo Finance. Her signature work look is pants with a blouse or a pantsuit that lets her feel confident without looking stuffy or too dated. Hahm wears a rich-color velvet suit with a pair of fun, colorful open-toe heels. The key to this power look is the cut of the suit — cropped to the ankle to elongate her shape — and her confidence to carry off the color and the fabric.

A signature look for Megan Levinson, who work as Yahoo’s corporate communication manager, is usually a dress that sits slightly above the knee with motorcycle booties and a leather jacket. However, since Levinson is 7 1/2 months pregnant, the challenge is finding something that not only fits her growing bump, but allows her to feel comfortable when she is meeting with clients. A dress that has structure and lets her sit and feel comfortable is key in her power look during the final months of pregnancy. The final touch to complete her power look is personal jewelry that she never takes off.
