I've read about, reported on and assigned stories on the Meghan Markle Effect, or the Markle Sparkle, for many years, fascinated by the effect the Duchess of Sussex can have on a brand just by wearing it. The well-established phenomenon has helped raise the profile of many small or up-and-coming designers, introducing them to a global audience. And now I, too, have been caught up in the Markle Sparkle, newly obsessed with a label she's worn twice this spring.

Back in April, Markle emerged in Florida, supporting husband Prince Harry at a polo match while donning an excellent halter-neck silk-and-hemp ivory midi dress from Los Angeles-based Heidi Merrick. The brand's been around since 2006, but the Duchess's stamp of approval sent it into a different stratosphere — especially when, weeks later, she wore another one of its dresses while on tour in Nigeria. That compelled me to browse the website, where I quickly found the summer vibe of my dreams.

Dubbed the Alice, it's a riff on the cotton shirt dress, which Heidi Merrick reimagines in a sculptural trapeze shape. It has a crossed pleat detail at the front that flares out into the midi skirt, as well as triangular cap sleeves that add structure to the loose silhouette.

The shirting version comes in black and tan, too. There's also a viscose version available in black ($535) and an orange palm print ($575). The e-comm images really sell the vibe, too, with the model wearing oversized sunglasses and tie-up leather sandals, her hair up in a messy, wind-swept bun.

You can belt the dress at the waist, but I'd prefer embracing the shapelessness for maximum comfort. This jumped to the top of my summer wish list, and I guess I have to thank Meg for that.
