Foster Cat and Pregnant Chihuahua Fall in Love in Austin Animal Shelter

It was a love story that few saw coming. A cat and a dog have fallen for each other in a big way. The animal advocacy group Austin Pets Alive! of Austin, Texas recently shared the love story of Manx for the Memories and a pregnant Chihuahua named Chloe. And their journey is just too cute.

Who knew that two animals could bond so quickly? But that's exactly what happened, according to Halle Hamilton, Cat Program Senior Manager for APA!

Speaking with Fox 7 Austin, Hamilton said she's only had a good experience with Manx.

"He's just a really, like, fun, cuddly, sweet, sweet cat," she said.

The sweet kitty looks totally normal from the outside, but he actually has a condition known as Manx Syndrome.

"Manx kitties are super cute," Hamilton explained. "No tail, but sometimes they have trouble with urinating or defecating on their own, or they just don't know when it's happening."

"So, with Manx, he does require bladder expressions, and he can go poop on his own," she continued. "He's fine that way. He just doesn't know when it's happening. So, you know, he'll leave you little treats that you just have to grab a paper towel and pick up."

Hamilton also doubles as Manx's foster mom and said that despite his bathroom issues he's been nothing but a love bug.

That was especially true when they welcome another animal into their home — a pregnant Chihuahua named Chloe.

"He has no shame, he immediately was right on top of her. Wherever she was, he wanted to be," Hamilton recalled.

Admittedly, Chloe was not equally as smitten with Manx. It took the Chihuahua a second to warm up to the cat.

"It was really cute, like her ears were kind of down, and she just would side eye at him and didn't seem to really understand, but wasn't bothered by him," Hamilton explained.

But sometimes when you know, you know. Manx stuck around Chloe. He was even there when she gave birth to her three Chihuahua puppies.

"The whole time," Hamilton said. "I put up the little pen to give her some space. I put his bed next to it and he just laid there the whole time waiting. He really cares about her. I think he feels like her protector."

Manx and Hamilton have been together since he was 7 weeks old — he's now 10 months old — and Hamilton said that she hasn't given up hope that the right person will come along and adopt him.

"Medical things can seem scary, like squeezing bladders. Sounds scary, but super easy. I've had this cat in my house, I promise it's super easy, not messy," she said.

But for now, Chloe and Manx have something good going on.

"Chloe is playing it coy, but she loves to sit with him," Hamilton said. "I think they both really appreciate having the companionship."

Manx is currently available for adoption at the Austin Pets Alive! website. Chloe and her pups will also be put up for adoption in the upcoming weeks.
