Fossil's New Racing Watches Are Sleek, Sexy, and a Wild Bargain

While the origins of the racing watch long predate cars peeling rubber, the auto industry has since become the inspiration for this sleek corner of the timepiece world. Now, Fossil is speeding into the chronograph-based sector with the unveiling of its Sport Tourer collection.

Drawing inspiration from “the roar of an engine, the feeling of wind and scenery rushing by, finely crafted leather seats, and the desire to take the long way home,” gush the brand's copywriters, the Fossil Sport Tourer truly delivers everything one looks for in this type of watch—at a price point (starting at under $200) that racing watch fans will otherwise never see. Its vintage appearance hearkens back to a time before racing was dominated by electronic technology.

Like all racing watches, the new line is made up of chronographs—all of which feature three subdials that allow wearers to record elapsed times, ranging from seconds to 12 hours. The sporty look is enhanced by its tachymeter bezel, offering precise speed measurements based on time traveled over a fixed distance. Fossil added an additional vintage touch with high-visibility contrasting dial colors and lume hour markers that offer readability in low-light conditions.

“The launch of Sport Tourer serves as the introduction of a racing watch into our assortment,” says Ryan White, Fossil creative director, watches. “When we designed the watch, we were extremely intentional with our design choices. Each design element, especially the use of color, makes sense aesthetically, but even more importantly highlights the ease and precision of the technical capabilities of the watch and its tachymeter.

“The Sport Tourer's allure lies in its meticulous attention to detail," adds White. "Vibrant red accents on the second hand and subdial emphasize the tachymeter's essential functionality. Luminous Arabic numerals and hands ensure visibility in any lighting conditions. The oversized crown not only enhances its sporty aesthetic but also enhances usability, making the Sport Tourer a remarkably intuitive timekeeping companion.”

The collection arrives with five options, and includes bracelets that range from solid steel to perforated Italian leather (inspired by driving gloves) to a black silicone strap knurled to mimic a tire tread.
