Kei Komuro, husband of Japan's former Princess Mako, failed the New York State bar exam for the second time. Komuro took the exam in February, and his name was not on the publicly available list of people who passed.

Komuro, who graduated from Fordham Law School in 2021, also failed last summer's bar exam, and will reportedly be taking the exam for a third time in July 2022. Komuro has been clerking for a New York City law firm as he studies for the bar. According to a press release from the New York State bar, only 30% of repeat takers passed the exam.

Mako is the niece of Emperor Naruhito, and she gave up her royal title to marry Kei in October 2021. "Kei is irreplaceable for me. For us, marriage is a necessary choice to live while cherishing our hearts," Mako said during the press event following her wedding. The couple got engaged in 2017, but delayed their nuptials due to intense media scrutiny; Mako was even diagnosed with PTSD prior to the wedding.

In an unprecedented decision, Mako declined her dowry of around $1.4 million, making her the first female imperial family member since World War II to opt out of this payment. The Komuros left Japan soon after marrying and moved to New York City in November 2021.

This week, reports surfaced that Mako is now assisting curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in an unpaid internship capacity. Mako, the eldest daughter of Japan's Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, graduated with a degree in art and cultural heritage from the International Christian University in Tokyo, and received her master's in art museum and gallery studies from the University of Leicester.
