Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett—who played for both the Patriots and the Ravens during his tenure—has passed away.

Mallett, who was a third-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, was just 35 years old when, according to multiple reports, he drowned in Florida. It's unclear exactly when the tragic accident occurred but, according to Arkansas' Deltaplex News, he was rushed to a nearby hospital from a Destin-area beach, where he was pronounced dead.

Luke Matheson, a journalist with the local publication, shared a statement from Mallett's employer, the White Hall School District, on Twitter: "It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett. Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers."

Mallett began his career prospects at White Hall High School in Arkansas and went on to play collegiate football for the Michigan Wolverines and Arkansas Razorbacks between 2007 and 2010. During that time, he finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2010, as reported by TMZ.

In 2011, he became the 74th-overall pick to the New England Patriots, where he went on to serve as Tom Brady's backup for three seasons.

In 2014, he was traded to the Hoston Texans, but he suffered a season-ending injury after starting just two games. He played six games the next season before he was traded to the Ravens.

He played two seasons with the Baltimore-based team, retiring from the pro league after the 2017 season, before becoming a career coach. He became his alma mater's head coach just last year.

Mallett wasn't married at the time of his death and left behind no children. According to The Sun, he was previously married to Tiffany Seeley, with their marriage lasting just four months in 2020.
