Former Mets and Yankees outfielder Darryl Strawberry turns 62 on Tuesday, but on Monday night he commemorated the occasion by announcing he had suffered a heart attack earlier in the day.

Strawberry took to Instagram last night, where he posted a photo of himself smiling in a hospital bed flanked by family. “Praising God for His amazing grace and loving mercy in saving my life this evening from a heart attack,” he wrote. “I am so happy and honored to report that all is well.”

Strawberry went on to give just a few details of the ordeal, thanking the hospital staff for working with haste to save his life. “So thankful for the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for responding so quickly,” he continued, “and bringing me through a stent-procedure that has brought my heart to total restoration!!!

“Your prayers are so absolutely appreciated as I continue to recover, in Jesus Name!” Strawberry told his fans.

Strawberry was drafted into the Mets directly out of his California high school. He played with the team for eight seasons, winning Rookie of the Year in 1983, before he went back to his home state to play for the Dodgers and then the Giants. He inevitably returned to the East Coast to play for the Yankees for five seasons before his retirement.

During his professional career, he saw the Mets to a World Series win in 1986; and he aided the Yankees in two World Series championships, in 1996 and 1999. On June 1 of this year, the Mets will retire Strawberry’s No. 18 jersey.
