Former Grey’s Anatomy Stars Eric Dane and Patrick Dempsey Reunited During Quarantine

Grey’s Anatomy fans have been seriously disappointed lately, as the 16th season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. But a new photo showing a reunion between two beloved characters should help cheer everybody up.
Eric Dane, who played Mark Sloane (aka “McSteamy”) on Grey’s from season two through the beginning of season nine, tweeted out an image of himself and Patrick Dempsey, who played Derek Shepherd (aka “McDreamy”), on what appears to be a hike together. And yes, they were following the social distancing guidelines from medical experts. “Blurry pic of how to hang out 6 feet apart @PatrickDempsey,” he wrote.
We absolutely love to see it. What’s better than two of the show’s most iconic characters carrying their fictional friendship over to real life and modeling excellent social distancing in the process?
Hopes of an actual on-air reunion are slim, though, given that both of their characters tragically died (Sloane from injuries suffered in the season-eight plane crash, and Derek due to untreated head injuries sustained in a car accident in season 11). In case it’s been a while since you watched the show, Derek and Sloane were best friends back in New York who had a falling out after Sloane had an affair with Derek’s then wife, Addison Shepherd (Kate Walsh). Eventually, they both ended up in Seattle and found their brotherly bond once again—even coupling up with sisters, Meredith and Lexie Grey.
While we may not get McSteamy and McDreamy on Grey’s Anatomy again, the show will be back for season 17.
“We’re waiting to see what happens with the world,” showrunner Krista Vernoff told the Hollywood Reporter. “I will start a season-17 writers room in May, and at that point, I imagine our conversation will be about starting our story from where we left off in season 16. But I don’t think we can take unproduced scripts that we didn’t shoot and shoot them. We’re going to have had a break and have new ideas. We’ve been texting each other ideas already. Some of those things that we had decided, we’re changing because we’ll have had a break and have come up with better ideas. And some of it is going to have to change because you’re taking what was going to be a regular episode and have to turn it into a season premiere and that will require some reimagining.”
