Forecasters Recap Epicly Snowy Start To March, Share Incoming Storm Details

Most skiers are aware that the start of this month proved heroic for ski resorts across the West—social media feeds stuffed full of salivation-inducing powder turns saw to that.

But forecasters OpenSnow did us one better, sharing a map of the Western U.S. that pins precisely which parts of the region received the most snow.

It was a unique storm cycle in that just about every ski resort in the West fared well—sorry to all the East Coasters out there.

However, there were still winners and losers. A notable example is Sugar Bowl Resort, California, which saw a whopping 128 inches during the storm of the season. Other resorts weren't quite this lucky. Angel Fire Resort, New Mexico, only received a foot.

What of the rest of the month, though? Is this "miracle March" that everyone keeps talking about going to happen, or what?

Well, maybe. It doesn't look quite as promising as this most recent storm cycle.

"The pattern will slow down compared to what we've seen recently, but weak to moderate storms will continue through at least the middle of March," OpenSnow wrote on Instagram.

Meteorologist Chris Tomer, in a separate forecast, provided a more granular look at expected snowfall totals. His take? The Pacific Northwest stands to benefit the most. Resorts like Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, could see as much as three feet of snow by mid-March.

Of course, at this point, we're primarily talking about long-range forecasts, so a bit of uncertainty is a key ingredient. Still, with all the snow that fell across the West, a little break wouldn't hurt too much. Everyone in Lake Tahoe, California, has to dig themselves out, after all.
