There's a lot to factor into plans to retire, especially nowadays. How expensive is housing? What is there to do nearby? That doesn't even include other factors such as family situations and medical needs. But Sioux Falls has found itself in esteemed company on Forbes' list of Best Places to Retire in 2024.

The list of 25 cities around the country was compiled from more than 800 locales based on housing costs, crime rates, health care options and weather hazards.

Sioux Falls also made the magazine's cut for best places to retire in 2018 and 2023.

Why is Sioux Falls one of Forbes' best places to retire in 2024?

Forbes notes that the median home price in Sioux Falls is 16% below the national median. Sioux Falls also got credit for having an "excellent ratio of physicians per capita." Aside from those all-too-familiar snow events that South Dakotans have grown accustomed to, Sioux Falls is not overly vulnerable to natural hazards that dinged cities in states like Florida.

Sioux Falls was also labeled as a very bikeable city with good air quality. South Dakota's lack of state income taxes or estate taxes was another plus. The city was dinged for its' above-average serious crime rate.
