On Father's Day, 1973, Johnny Miller tapped in his 63rd shot to win the U.S. Open. And because Miller and his contemporaries in this era of golf may still be some of the most excitingly dressed pro golfers to date, Miller was walking the greens of Oakmont Country Club that Sunday in a pair of Footjoy golf shoes you couldn't miss, even through a grainy ABC Broadcast.

Fifty years later (and coincidentally, during the 100th anniversary year of Footjoy's founding), the brand is releasing a new collection in honor of the '73 U.S. Open, borrowing inspiration from Miller's red-white-and-blue spikes, anchored by two new shoes the brand is dubbing "The Centennial Collection."

The limited-edition Premiere Series Centennial Wilcoxs aren't quite loud enough to give Ian Poulter's PJ any turbulence, but they will be hard to miss on the fairways and greens of Los Angeles Country Club. FootJoy employed deeper, richer hues of reds and blues in the new iteration—they aren't the typical Bomb Pop-USA colors you're used to seeing in shoes and clothing with nods to Old Glory. Along with this spin on the Wilcox, Footjoy applied a similar treatment to the Women's Centennial Shield Tip, and added a capsule collection of apparel that marries modern material with elements of the best of vintage golf style, like a button-pocket polo and a wool cardigan.

Max Homa, World No. 7, who's gotten nice and comfortable on golf's biggest stages, will be gunning for his first major when he tees off on June 15 at LACC. He'll be in the shoes, even though making a style statement isn't usually high on his agenda.

"I 'm not flashy," he told me over Zoom in May, sitting in front of a shelf holding at least four of his six trophies and a little extra room just in case. "I'll say this. When you're at a Major and there are more eyeballs, you want to try something a little bit different and a little bit 'cooler.' They provide us with that. I love that shoe."

If you're someone who likes to bet on fairytale storylines, Homa isn't just gunning for his first major. He and his wife welcomed a baby boy in October 2022. He's an American golfer gunning for his first major, at the U.S. Open, in his hometown, on his first Father's Day. What's not to love?

Footjoy's limited edition Centennial collection is now available exclusively on FootJoy.com on Thursday, June 15.
