'Flower' moon to appear in May skies. When it is and what to know about its history.

There have been plenty of skyward spectacles to enjoy recently, whether you're talking about the display of northern lights, a full solar eclipse, or one of the many meteor showers taking place.

But there's one event that's coming up that's more traditional - a full moon. It's actually called a "Flower Moon," tied to the natural histories.

Here's what you need to know about seeing it.

When is the Flower Moon?

The Flower Moon can be seen at night on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

According to Space.com, on the evening in question, sky-watchers "will see the full moon will also pass in front of the red star Antares, (Alpha Scorpii) the brightest star in Scorpius, the Scorpion."

Why is it called the Flower Moon?

The Farmer's Almanac explains that the name is rooted in the fact that "flowers spring forth across North America in abundance" at this time every year in May.

The name, "Flower Moon," has been attributed to the Algonquin people of the colonial days, circa 18th Century, the Farmer's Almanac states. Many Algonquin people were located in Narragansett, Rhode Island at that time in history.

What's the best way to observe the Flower Moon?

Unlike meteor showers, a full moon can be seen clearly with the naked eye.

But in a recent interview with USA Today Network, Tim Brothers, Massachusetts Institute of Technology technical Instructor and observatory manager, said with any case of stargazing, it's much better if you're using a good telescope or a pair of binoculars.

What will the weather be like on May 23?

Currently, Weather.com is calling for mostly cloudy conditions that evening with a low temperature of 61 degrees.

The National Weather Service is calling for "a chance of showers" that evening as well, so only time will tell how well the Flower Moon can be seen.
