Conversation is replete with adages we might apply to furniture companies’ enthusiasm for recreating previous models. What’s old is new again. Comfort is king. If it ain’t broke . . . While tastes and trends are cyclical and the vintage market is strong, not everyone wants a patina. Plus, some designers have become so collectible that pieces are scarce and prices stratospheric. Enter the reissue.

Museum exhibitions and fair installations celebrate these legends. New York’s Museum of Modern Art counts 25 pieces by Mario Bellini, including 1972’s Le Bambole armchair in its permanent collection. The institution also owns Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s Luminator floor lamp, which it exhibited in the 1997 Achille Castiglioni retrospective. But that’s not to say that there haven’t been changes.
