A Florida woman shocked police officers on Monday when she proceeded to pull a foot-long alligator from her yoga pants during an early morning traffic stop.

The woman had been riding shotgun in a pickup truck driven by a man who blew past a stop sign in Punta Gorda at about 3:15 a.m., said an incident report from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. The officer who stopped them noticed there were wild animals inside the vehicle and asked to see what other live cargo the couple was transporting, according to WBBH.

So the couple stepped out of the vehicle, and the woman opened up a backpack to reveal 42 small three-striped mud turtles and one softshell turtle. When the officer asked if there was anything else, the woman proceeded to reach into her yoga pants, remove a baby alligator she had been smuggling and place it on the truck bed.

The man and woman explained that they had come from a local underpass, where they were trying to collect different reptiles, including frogs and snakes. The officer issued the man a warning for the stop-sign violation, then immediately turned the couple’s case over to the Florida Fish Wildlife and Conservation Commission (FWC), which arrived at the scene at 3:50 a.m.

The commission told WBBH that the turtle and alligator species found on the couple were native to Florida but were regulated. The FWC seized and released the animals back into the wild, then issued citations to the man and woman for possessing them and for violating bag limits for the reptiles.
