Florida State football: Running back Trey Benson announces he will return in 2023

Another major domino for the Florida State football team announced he is returning for the 2023 season.

Running back Trey Benson announced his decision to return to the Seminoles on social media on Thursday evening.

"We’re just scratching the surface, 2023 is gonna be historic," Benson said.

Benson, an Oregon transfer, rushed for a team-high 965 yards on 141 carries and nine touchdowns this season. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry. Coming into the season, Benson had just six rushes for 22 yards and a touchdown with the Ducks.

He stated before the season his goal was to become FSU’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Cam Akers in 2019 and has a chance to accomplish that when No. 13 Seminoles (9-3) plays Oklahoma (6-6) in Cheez-It Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 29 (the game will be broadcast on ESPN).

Benson's 92.8 Pro Football Focus grade ranked fourth in the nation. He gained 671 yards after contact and tied for fourth nationally with 77 missed tackles forced. The three players ahead of him each had nearly double the carries.

His 250.5 elusive score graded out as the best in the nation, well ahead of Arizona's Michael Wiley (194.4).

Quarterback Jordan Travis, receiver Mycah Pittman, offensive linemen Robert Scott and Maurice Smith, linebackers Tatum Bethune and Kalen DeLoach, as well as cornerback Renardo Green, are among the players who have announced they will return next season.

Receiver Keyshawn Helton, offensive lineman Rod Orr, along with defensive tackles Jarrett Jackson and Shambre Jackson, defensive end George Wilson, linebacker and former Chiles High star Amari Gainer and defensive backs Sam McCall and Sidney Williams have entered the transfer portal.

FSU added defensive tackle and former Gadsden County High standout Darrell Jackson from the transfer portal from Miami on Wednesday.
