Florida Dog Owner Bereft After Her Yorkie Was Adopted to a Different Family

A truly heartbreaking story out of Miami Dade will make you hug your dog a little bit closer today. Alexandra Du Pont and her little Yorkie dog named Bello were living on a boat in Key Biscayne. In November Miami Marine Patrol Officers came to the boat and said it wasn’t properly registered. When Du Pont couldn't provide proper registration they took her to jail.

They also took Bello to Miami Dade Animal Services.

WSVN reports that when Du Pont was released after 12 days she went to go pick Bello up and discovered he had been adopted to another family.

Gabriella Dominguez from Miami Dade Animal Services said “The dog was put up for adoption and it was successfully adopted about two days after the adoption hold was up.”

According to county policy, when someone is arrested, their dog is held for three business days. If no one comes to pick them up, they are put up for adoption. Bello did have a microchip but it wasn’t registered.

Watching the video of DuPont explain how she got her sweet dog for a therapy pet after her husband died of esophagus cancer is just so heartbreaking. You can tell how absolutely heartbroken she is without her dog. The worst part is that Miami Dade Animal Services asked the new owners to return the dog and DuPont even offered to buy the family a new dog and they hung up on her!

We really hope the new owners have a change of heart and give Bello back, especially after hearing this heartbreaking story. We are sure Bello misses his owner too.

How Dogs Can Provide Comfort as Therapy Animals

Dogs can provide comfort as therapy animals to humans in so many ways, thanks to their loving nature and abilities to form strong bonds with their owners.

A bond between a dog and an owner who has suffered a loss of a human loved one can be especially strong because the dog has been a source of support and comfort to the human in their darkest hour.

Therapy Dogs explains, research has shown that the presence of a beloved pet or therapy animal can help a person control daily anxiety, regulate emotional arousals, and improve mood. Since therapy dogs are trained to be attentive to a person’s needs and offer unconditional love, they can often stabilize intense emotions.

Knowing your dog is out there in the world and you don't have them must be one of the most heartbreaking feelings ever.

We feel so bad for DuPont and Bello and hope they are back together soon.
