Florence Pugh Explains Why She Won’t Be Discussing Intimate Scenes in Interviews
The "Don't Worry Darling" star gets candid about those kinds of questions.
Florence Pugh is on a press roll for Don’t Worry Darling, the upcoming film in which she stars alongside Harry Styles, but there’s one thing she’s done talking about with interviewers: sex scenes.
When the trailer debuted in early May, people naturally latched onto the spicier scenes featured in the teaser. Styles stans aside, it’s no surprise that women, especially, would be excited to see intimate scenes shot from the female gaze, which focuses on the woman’s pleasure rather than the man’s. Think Bridgerton, for example.
And that was, in part, what second-time director Olivia Wilde, Styles’ IRL girlfriend, was going for. In an interview with Vogue for their January cover story, Wilde spoke about the more intimate scenes, revealing that she took inspiration from films like Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal. “Why isn’t there any good sex in film anymore?” she wondered. With Don’t Worry Darling, she hopes the audience “realize[s] how rarely they see female hunger, and specifically this type of female pleasure.”
Still, it’s understandable that Pugh is over the intense focus.
“When it’s reduced to your sex scenes, or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone, it’s not why we do it,” she said in an interview with Harper's Bazaar, adding, “It’s not why I’m in this industry.”
She admitted that it comes with the nature of casting “the most famous pop star in the world." And while she is aware that those conversations will continue happening, she won’t be participating in them. “[This movie is] bigger and better than that,” she said. “And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.”
The cast includes Chris Pine, Nick Kroll, and many other talented crew members.
