Florence Pugh has confirmed her split from Zach Braff, to whom she had been romantically linked since 2019, in a new interview for Harper's BAZAAR's September 2022 cover story.

The former couple, who were famously among the more private pairings of Hollywood, decided to quietly end their relationship earlier this year.

"We've been trying to do this separation without the world knowing, because it's been a relationship that everybody has an opinion on," Pugh tells BAZAAR. "We just felt something like this would really do us the benefit of not having millions of people telling us how happy they are that we're not together. So we've done that. I automatically get a lumpy throat when I talk about it."

Pugh also criticizes the frenzy of public interest in celebrities' personal lives. "Whenever I feel like that line has been crossed in my life, whether it's paparazzi taking private moments, or moments that aren't even real, or gossip channels that encourage members of the public to share private moments of famous people walking down the street, I think it's incredibly wrong," she says. "I don't think that people, just because they have this job, that every aspect of their life should be watched and written about. We haven't signed up for a reality TV show."

Their desire for privacy isn't unwarranted. In the past, both Pugh and Braff repeatedly played defense when it came to criticisms of their 21-year age gap (Pugh is 26, while Braff is 47).

Last year, the Little Women star talked to The Sunday Times about the deluge of hate comments she received after wishing Braff a happy 46th birthday on Instagram.

"I think it bugs people that it's not who they expected," she said at the time. "But it's my life and I'm not doing anything to please people or to make it a better headline or story. I want to also be a person!"

Prior to their split, Braff and Pugh worked on forthcoming film A Good Person. Braff, who directed the movie, wrote the script with Pugh in mind as the leading lady.

"The movie that we made together genuinely was probably one of my most favorite experiences," Pugh tells BAZAAR. "It felt like a very natural and easy thing to do."
