‘Floor Is Lava’ Fans Are Trying to Figure Out the Ingredients in the "Secret" Orange Goo

From Good Housekeeping

There’s nothing quite like a friendly competition with a nostalgic twist.

Netflix’s latest hit reality competition show Floor Is Lava reimagines the childhood thrill of pretending to avoid gooey, bubbling lava while overcoming makeshift obstacles. Reminiscent of the '90s adventure show Legends of the Hidden Temple, Floor Is Lava also drew inspiration from movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and video games like Uncharted.

The team that best avoids falling into the lava and earns the most points wins. The grand prize? A whopping $10,000 and the opportunity to meet Floor Is Lava host Rutledge Wood.

While watching the fun and (inevitably messy) show, folks are naturally becoming curious about the lava itself. Is it actually hot? What goes into the gooey mixture?

According to what show creators Irad Eyal and Megan McGrath told The Hollywood Reporter, the lava is a secret proprietary blend made by "Hollywood's biggest chemists and slime/goopy substance-makers." Per Vulture, the final product is the result of three months of research during which “at least 50 different formulas” were tested.

“It took a long time to figure out exactly how do you make this thing bubble, flow, be slippery, be viscous in the right way, and also be safe that people can be submerged in it for minutes at a time, hours at a time, whatever it is, and come out safely,” Irad told The Hollywood Reporter.

That said, when some contestants are shown coming in contact with the lava, they’ve indicated that the substance was, in fact, hot (or at least warm). But it seems like it’s just them fully committing to the part. Megan shared with the outlet that people were encouraged to “have fun with it and really go for it: push, pull, swing, climb, play” but they were never instructed to “act in any way.”

“I think when you're playing this and you're in that room and there's 100,000 gallons of lava in front of you boiling and bubbling and smoking, you just turn into your 8-year-old self again,” she told THR. “When your brother touched the carpet, you would always say, ‘Noooooo!’ in that fun way. So I think people just went for it. We had really good contestants and they had a really good time with it.”

So there you have it!
