Flooding From "Extraordinary Storm Event" Forces Las Vegas Ski Resort To Close For The Rest Of The Summer

Yesterday, August 24th, Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort, Nevada, announced that they'd been forced to prematurely conclude summer operations because of flood damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary.

Now unavailable summer activities at the resort included mountain biking, sightseeing, and hiking.

The closure is joined by a similar measure enacted by the U.S. Forest Service in the region.

According to a Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort press release shared with Powder yesterday, the federal agency announced the extension of closures "on all National Forest System areas, roads, and trails in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area" until further notice.

Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort is within the SMNRA.

In the press release, Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort representatives reported that "chairlifts, trails, and other essential facilities and infrastructure were impacted by Tropical Storm Hilary."

The storm deposited 9.8 inches of rain last weekend.

Infrastructure and residential property surrounding Lee Canyon were damaged by heavy flooding, too, including homes, trail systems, and roadways.

"This was an extraordinary storm event, which has left significant damage to Lee Canyon and the Spring Mountains," said Dan Hooper, Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort's general manager, in the press release. "Our goal is to ensure public safety. When the U.S. Forest Service deems it safe, Lee Canyon's teams will begin restoring affected areas."

The resort plans to contact bike park day ticket and pass holders about their options going forward.

Hooper concluded the press release by assuring Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort clientele that "we will be ready for the start of the 2023/24 winter season."

In the comments section of the included Instagram post, several people expressed love and support for the resort.

"I am so sadden but know the resort will come back better than ever! Stay safe!!!! Let us know if you need help from volunteers. #weloveourmountain," wrote one.

"Thank you to the entire staff for all their hard work. Y’all rule. See you when the snow falls," said another.
