Floating in a Frozen Lake to Watch the Northern Lights Is Our New Dream Trip

You’ve never experienced the Northern Lights like this before.

Now can you not only see the gorgeous, dancing ripples and waves of the Aurora Borealis in the sky, but you can also enjoy nature's greatest light show while feeling the ripples and waves of an icy Finnish lake.

While floating in ice-cold water might not seem like everyone’s idea of “fun,” strapping on a high quality thermal suit will keep you nice and warm on this travel excursion in Rovaniemi, Finland.

The Aurora Floating Experience comes from Off The Map Travel. It’s a three-hour tour (of sorts) that begins at 7:30 p.m., when all light has left the sky, and you can wade into the icy lake to gaze away.

Included in the experience is a four-day excursion in Rovaniemi, with a stay at the Arctic Treehouse Hotel. Guests can explore the surrounding nature and town — including Santa Park, the “home cavern of Santa Claus.”

Winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights. If floating like an ice cube to do so doesn't sound appealing, consider some drier options, like staying in a glass igloo and watching from bed or taking a cruise that will guarantee you'll see them or a second cruise is free.

A three-night, four-day itinerary starts at £1,289 (about $1,735) per person based on two adults sharing a double suite at the Arctic Treehouse Hotel. The price includes transfers to and from Rovaniemi Airport, however flights to Finland are not included.
