Flea’s taste in watches might be as rare as his signature bass licks.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers co-founder appeared on the web series “Hot Ones” last week with what appears to be pretty special watch dangling from his wrist—an F. P. Journe Octa Lune. The dazzling timepiece, which was first spotted by Instagram user @Niccoloy, makes clear that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is a connoisseur who knows his stuff (or he has a very discerning advisor).

It’s commonplace to see a celebrity wearing a Rolex, Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet these days, but an F. P. Journe is still a rarer sight. That’s because the watchmaker, which was founded by François-Paul Journe in 1999, is an independent operation (Chanel bought a 20 percent stake in the company in 2018) that makes less than a thousand pieces a year. Add this exclusivity to the brand’s design sensibility and craftsmanship and you have yourself the kind of watches that make informed collectors go gaga.

In the video, Flea’s F. P. Journe looks like the Octa Lune, which might be the model that best reflects its namesake’s somewhat baroque aesthetic. It comes with either a 40 or 42 mm platinum case that houses two 18-karat white gold dials—one displays the time, while the other features an aperture for the date, a retrograde power indicator and a moonphase—topped with a sapphire crystal. It’s powered by the Calibre 1300.3, an automatic mechanical movement made from 18-karat rose gold that has a power reserve that can ensure precise time for up to five days. Rounding the package out is a sharp black crocodile leather strap.

Unsurprisingly, a watch like the Octa Luna comes with a rather hefty price tag. The watch retails for $55,000 but regularly sells for twice that on the secondary market. Fortunately, as a longtime member of one of the most successful rock bands of all time, who’s also done some memorable work on the big screen, we have the distinct feeling this watch lover didn’t mind splashing out on such a rare piece.
