Flaky croissants alert: Popular East Village bakery, IZOLA, reopening in June

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/ KUSI) — IZOLA, a popular East Village bakery that many have raved over online, is preparing to reopen at a new location this summer.

Yelp ranked IZOLA as No. 2 in top spots for croissants in the U.S. in 2023, and just a year before that it was named the top bakery in the country by the crowd-sourced review platform.

Though the business was thriving, IZOLA’s owners, Jeffrey Brown and Jenny Chen, announced in October 2023 that the bakery would be closing for several months for renovation work in their kitchen.

The reopening was originally slated for January 2024 but things changed due to new building requirements. Specifically, the bakery was informed it had to increase the structural captivity to their dining room, as explained in a blog post created by the owners.

This prompted another announcement in March 2024, informing their loyal customers that they were looking for new locations to serve the community. Then, just a month later, a new home was found.

The good news is that the bakery will remain in the East Village.

The business is set to reopen in June 2024 at 1429 Island Ave., which is located between 14th and 15th streets in downtown San Diego. The area is right beside Fault Line Park, making for a great overlook view for those enjoying food and drinks on their patio.

A new metal building will house the 11,129-square-foot headquarters for IZOLA, the bakery owners explained on social media. They said the project has implemented sustainable features such as zero emissions operations, passive cooling, strategic daylight control, rainwater harvesting, among other eco-friendly features.

Locals and tourists alike can soon indulge in their small-batch croissants and wild sourdough, once again. As an added bonus, the bakery said customers can anticipate “exciting new flavor drops” to celebrate the grand reopening occasion.
