  • Chip Gaines told Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on Today that he’s cutting the shoulder-length hair he grew out in quarantine.

  • Fans have such mixed opinions on the hairstyle that Today created a poll to determine the popular view.

  • The Fixer Upper star is shaving it as a donation to charity.

If you’re a fan of the long, luscious locks that Chip Gaines acquired in quarantine, he has some sad news. The Fixer Upper star recently told Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on Today that he’s shaving his head—just when his wife Joanna finally started to like the burly look.

“It’s grown on me,” Joanna said of his shoulder-length strands. “I think I’m going to miss it, for sure.”

Since he started growing it out, fans have been incredibly vocal with their opinions about it. “Nobody can agree on anything,” he said. “You’re either in this camp or you’re in this camp. Well, Twitter is very similar in that regard with my hair. It’s either you love this or you [hate it].”

Even Savannah and Hoda were divided—Hoda was team trim and Savannah said the long look is “cute.” The style has become such a divisive topic, in fact, that Today created a live poll to collect some solid data. And at the time of publication, of around 1,500 voters, 74% say it’s “not for me,” 14% “love it,” and 12% fall somewhere in the middle.

Similar to many others, Chip’s new ‘do spawned from a lack of access to barber shops during the pandemic. Once his hair started to grow out, he let it go.

“The pandemic hit and we just cut that out of our typical routine, probably like most people, and so after it got a little longer and a little longer, I just was like, ‘You know what, I’m going to go for it,’” he said. “‘I’m going to grow this out.’”

And now that he’s lived with the style for a while, he’s ready to say goodbye. He told Today he’ll be shaving it for a charity donation—which is something he’s done before.

“I like to continue to bring in bucket lister-type situations into my life and I was like, hey, when I die I’m going to say, ‘You remember that season that I had that long hair?’ And when I’m bald as a bat here in a couple of months after we shave it—literally, razor-blade bald—then I’ll say I’ve never been bald before either,” he explained.

Despite polarizing fan opinions, those who will miss his hair the most might be his daughters, who took advantage of it to practice braiding.

Now to wait for the big (shaved) reveal!
