Solange’s Grammys look was positively radiant. The dress: gold and Gucci. The beauty vibe: natural and dewy — thanks to makeup artist Dana Delaney, who used the gown for inspiration and Chantecaille products to see it through.

Beyoncé’s younger sister, who already won her Grammy for Best R&B Performance and whose album A Seat at the Table is one of the most hailed of the year, worked with Delaney for both her recent Saturday Night Live appearance and for the Grammys. Here, according to the makeup artist, is what you need to know about the cool and enigmatic singer’s approach to creating a special look.

  1. She doesn’t plan ahead when she can avoid it. “She’s an artist. She’s very creative. If something is not going right, she does it on a whim. Right before she leaves for the Grammys, she asks me to add these black lines to her eyes — and she’s running late,” Delaney tells Yahoo Beauty. And in her everyday life? “A lot of her makeup looks like she does it on her own. A lot of what you see on Instagram, she’s playing with makeup herself. She’s good in an unkempt way. She does imperfect perfect makeup.”

  2. Her look is so avant-garde that she’s her own inspiration. “She marches to the beat of her own drum. Her inspiration is New Orleans, a cross between Minnie Riperton and Kate Bush,” says Delaney. “She’s a true creative person. She doesn’t care about trends or what people think. She goes with what she likes. She has a clear visual of who she is and what she is.”

  3. Delaney didn’t know the exact look until the day of the Grammys. “She showed me a picture of herself in the dress when I arrived. I didn’t see it in person until she was leaving. It’s this tarnished gold Gucci gown. It’s like an exotic bird,” she says.

  4. No, big sister Beyoncé, pregnant with twins, wasn’t there getting ready with Solange. “She had her own business to get to today. She has a big day,” Delaney says.

  5. Solange wanted her skin to be the star. And she’s super into her tresses, which are always amazingly natural and unfettered. “There’s some work that goes into her hair. She’s very hands-on with her hair,” Delaney says. “Once the stylist is done, she plays with it herself. She’s very into her entire look.”
