Five Nights at Freddy’s Has a Big Opening Weekend

Despite the disparaging reviews, Five Nights at Freddy's had a huge opening weekend.

Audiences chased down the adaptation of the popular video game, raking in $78 million at the domestic box office from 3675 theaters, with a further $52.5 million coming in from overseas.

The grand total of $130.5 million is one of the biggest openings ever for a horror movie and for a video game adaptation, as per @FilmUpdates.

Despite working consistently over the last few years, Josh Hutcherson has been under the radar since his turn in The Hunger Games movies as Peeta Mellark. He's starred in multiple films, TV series and even a couple of shorts and music videos, but this appears to be his first big hit at the box office since.

The video game of the same name first hit the scene in 2014. Described as a point-and-click survival horror game, the aim is to help security guard Mike Schmidt survive the night shift at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Sounds simple enough. However, some homicidal animatronic characters make it a little more challenging than it appears at first glance.

Hutcherson stars as Mike opposite the animatronics out of the Jim Henson Creature Shop. The film may have been described by some critics as "one of the poorest films in any genre this year", but the box office demand shows that audiences are chasing those adaptations no matter what.
