Is 'Five Nights at Freddy's' Getting a Sequel?

Five Nights at Freddy's, Blumhouse's horror comedy based on the hugely popular video game series, has performed well in its first week, proving that there is an audience out there beyond gamers who will buy a ticket to see cute cartoonish fast food mascots come alive and commit murder. And because we're living in the era of peak franchise, that means fans have one question on their minds: will there be a sequel?

The movie includes a mid-credits stinger which definitely seems to be setting up future movies. And there's certainly plenty more source material to adapt, with the game itself having multiple sequels and spinoffs.

Scream's Matthew Lillard, who plays a key role in the first movie, has reportedly signed a three-film contract, meaning there are definitely plans to spin out this adaptation into a full-blown franchise (with Lillard bringing some horror pedigree to proceedings). And director Emma Tammi has told Variety that, should the movie perform well enough at the box office and on streaming, she's eager to build out the lore of the video games on the big screen.

"We're definitely excited to keep making more movies in this world, should we be lucky enough to do that," she said. "This one was tied into the first game, and we would probably focus on tying the second one into the second game, and so on and so forth. But anything could happen. We'll have to see."

She added that, should a sequel happen, it will include more cameos from the YouTube gaming community. The first movie included a guest appearance by Cory Williams, aka CoryxKenshin, but was also supposed to feature gamer and influencer Markiplier, who had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict.

"Mark is a part of this franchise through and through," said Tammi. "We reached out and we all hoped to make it work. Unfortunately we were filming at the same time Markiplier was filming his film, and the scheduling didn’t work out for this one. But we would love to include him moving forward."

The odds of future movies being made are certainly favorable: Five Nights at Freddy's made 132 million globally on its opening weekend, setting a new record for Blumhouse and smashing expectations. Its status as one of the highest-performing horror releases on Halloween weekend will likely cement the chances of future movies in the Five Nights at Freddy's universe.
