  • The second season of Bridgerton dedicated its first two episodes to Marc Pilcher.

  • Marc was the Emmy-winning hair and makeup artist for the show's first season.

  • He died in October 2021 at 53.

Bridgerton, Netflix's hit historical romance binge, has just returned for season two.

The British television show is based on the best-selling romance series by Julia Quinn, which takes place between 1813 and 1827. The first season of Bridgerton followed the romance of two main characters, Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), as well as their family members and overall life in London high society during the Regency time period.

Eagle-eyed fans may notice the first two episodes are dedicated to the show’s late hair and makeup artist, Marc Pilcher.

Who was Marc Pilcher?

Pilcher was a renowned U.K.-based hair and makeup artist, who won the Creative Arts Emmy for his work on Bridgerton. He began his career in 1988 in the West End, where he worked on hit musicals like Company, Sunset Boulevard, and Aspects of Love, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pilcher began his work as a makeup artist for television in 2003 and later took his talents to film. He styled stars like Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Shirley MacLaine, Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Madonna, and Sir Ian McKeller, according to THR. He was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Mary Queen of Scots and won several Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards for Downton Abbey.

In his acceptance speech for his Bridgerton win, Marc called his experience with the show "the most exciting project for me to work on, to create for all of our beautiful cast."

He died in October 2021.

Pilcher, 53, died of complications from the COVID-19 virus shortly after his Emmy win. His agent told The Hollywood Reporter that he was fully vaccinated, and had no underlying conditions.

"The passing of Marc Pilcher is beyond words. I will forever be in awe of the incredible hairstyling and makeup work that he brought to Bridgerton. My heart goes out to his loved ones as we lost him way too soon," Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes said at the time.

Netflix added in a statement: "We are saddened by the loss of Marc Pilcher. A phenomenal talent, his work on Bridgerton season one was unrivaled, and he was a much-loved member of the crew. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time."
