While it may be spring, according to the calendar, the weather is only just starting to warm up. This means that my wardrobe is in limbo between winter and spring. I no longer need a heavyweight jacket, but it’s not hot enough to step outside without a coat yet.

This might shock you, but I’ve never owned a trench coat before, and not because I didn’t want one, but because I could never find a style that checked off all my boxes. I recently added The Cotton Modern Trench Coat from Everlane to my wardrobe in cornstalk — a timeless tan color — and I’ve worn it practically every day since receiving it.

I’ve tried my hardest to build out my dream capsule wardrobe, investing in timeless pieces that I can mix and match for a variety of outfits that will outlive trends (although I enjoy partaking in them every now and again). The second I saw this trench coat at Everlane, I knew it was what I had been looking for. Not only that, but it was a brand I could trust since our editors and several celebrities have been spotted wearing the brand’s pieces, such as Jennifer Garner and Katie Holmes, who was seen just this month in the patchwork jacket during a night out in NYC.

The 100 percent cotton fabric is well-made and my ideal thickness for added warmth without being too insulated like a puffer coat. The coat is also fully lined and feels substantial even over a tank top. However, the silhouette is what really sold me; it’s ultra-flattering and adds an elevated touch, even when layered over a sweat set. Its double-breasted button-down cut looks sophisticated and polished, and the tie-waist belt helps accentuate my shape, even if I layer it over bulkier sweaters when temperatures drop. The pockets are also extra-roomy to hold my essentials (keys, wallet, and phone).

My colleagues and fellow shopping editors are also huge fans of the brand and have added other spring styles to their wardrobes. Ariel Scotti, Partnerships Editorial Director, recently incorporated the breezy Dream Maxi Skirt into her lineup and called it “the ideal spring weight.” Editor Bridget Degnan loves the Organic Cotton Weekend Tank Dress for its “extremely comfortable” and breathable fabric. In a similar style to the trench coat, writer Rachel Trujillo added the Barn Jacket to her closet as her new “go-to lightweight jacket” for spring.

Grab the trench coat, which is my new go-to transitional jacket, and keep scrolling for more of our editors' favorites from Everlane.
