The First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Is Full of Dysfunctional Superhero Fun
Meet your new favorite superheroes. Netflix unveiled the trailer for its upcoming series The Umbrella Academy this week, and it promises a funny dysfunctional-family take on the big-budget comic book genre.
“In October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth,” a voiceover explains as the trailer flashes between origin story scenes. “None of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.”
Six of the children, who are “gifted with abilities far beyond the ordinary,” were adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves and assembled into a group called The Umbrella Academy. The children were trained to use their powers to help save the world, but over time, the once-famous crew became estranged and washed up as their abilities and personalities began to clash.
The traiIer then fast-forwards to show the six Hargreeves adoptees as teenagers, reuniting to solve the mystery of their father’s death. But old problems persist as Spaceboy (Tom Hopper), The Kraken (David Castañeda), The Rumor (Emmy Raver-Lampman), The Séance (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), and The White Violin (Ellen Page) struggle to work together to carry out their original mission — saving the world.
The Umbrella Academy is the brainchild of Gerard Way, the singer of aughts pop-punk/emo stalwarts My Chemical Romance. It also stars Mary J. Blige as Cha-Cha, Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy) as The Handler, Cameron Britton (Mindhunter) as Hazel, Ashley Madekwe (Revenge) as Detective Patch, and more. The 10-episode series arrives on Netflix on Friday, February 15.
