The First Silent Hill: Ascension Trailer Looks Suitably Spooky

Silent Hill: Ascension, the next Silent Hill “game” due out this month, has been a little bit of a mystery since it was announced. We knew vaguely what it was – not a game – but not really what it was about. Ascension’s first trailer has been released, and it raises as many questions as it answers.

The game is the first in a series of new Silent Hill projects after the series went formant for over a decade. The new set of projects will include a total remake of the fan favorite Silent Hill 2, a new game in the series, and an indie project from Stories Untold developer No Code.

Ascension isn’t exactly a game, as previously mentioned, but an interactive streaming series, where viewers will help solve puzzles and make decisions to influence how the story turns out. You will be able to simply watch it unfold, if you like, as well, with weekly episodes summarizing the story available in the Sony Pictures Core app on PS5 and PS4, as well as the Bravia Core app on TVs and smartphones.

The new trailer opens on a young mother and her son walking through a town as the series’ signature fog rolls in. We cut to another woman, who describes encountering a strange phenomenon.

“I did everything correctly, exactly as I was taught. Every word, every cut… But, what I saw, it was something new — something we don’t understand.”

More characters speak, with more things to say. We see glimpses of a terrifying creature, seen as if through the corner of your eye, setting up a truly spooky atmosphere. The trailer tells us we’ll see the stories of two families on the brink of damnation, and encourages us all to “experience the terror together.”

I was a little apprehensive of the idea of Silent Hill being told through the medium of interactive streaming, but after seeing this trailer, I’m a little more receptive to it. It looks like Silent Hill, it feels like Silent Hill, and it gave me the same chills that every Silent Hill game before it did.

The first streaming session for Silent Hill: Ascension will start at 6pm PT on October 31.
