Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon revealed a behind-the-scenes shot taken from the film set of Mortal Kombat 2 yesterday. He posted the tweet below on his account with the caption “Heeeeeeeeeere’s JOHHNY !”

It shows The Boys actor Karl Urban out of costume posing next to Boon. Urban is set to play the role of vain Hollywood himbo Johnny Cage, a satirical send up of ‘80s action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. Cage didn’t feature in 2021’s first Mortal Kombat film, but he’s one of the fighting game’s most enduring characters, and will be a key part of the movie’s appeal.

As for Urban’s fellow cast mates, massive British fitness freak Martyn Ford is listed on the film’s IMDB page as Shao Kahn, tyrannical central villain of the long-running video game series. Meanwhile, Jessica McNamee and Tadanobu Asano return to reprise their roles as Sonya Blade and Lord Raiden respectively. Although, the Screen Actors Guild going on strike will likely delay production.

The upcoming film isn’t the only Mortal Kombat product in the pipeline. Fans are also keen for developer NetherRealm Studio’s video game reboot, which releases September 19 across all platforms. If you’ve not seen it in action, the Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay debut is gloriously gory.
