First Norwegian Crusie ship for China will feature art by Tan Ping

Norwegian Cruise Line has unveiled the design plans for Norwegian Joy, the company's first ship built for the Chinese market.

Famous artist Tan Ping chose an abstract phoenix as the focus for the hull of the ship, which will dock in Shanghai and Beijing.

“The phoenix symbolizes beauty and good luck in Chinese culture,” said Tan Ping, in a statement. “Norwegian Joy will bridge across the West and the East and bring Chinese people’s best wish to the world and everyone in her path.”

Tan said that this artwork—covering a cruise ship—will be his largest to date: “Traveling worldwide on Norwegian Joy, I also expect that it will reach a far greater number of viewers than any of my previous works.”
