First 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' trailer offers second dose of ABBA-inspired musical comedy

The 2008 film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia! may not have been a critical darling, but with an astounding $609 million global box-office haul — making it the most successful movie in Meryl Streep’s illustrious career — it was a bona fide smash hit. Thus, it was likely only a matter of time before the entire gang got back together again for a singing-and-dancing sequel. And as proven by the first trailer for the film (which is set for next summer), they’ll be doing so for a rollicking tale that elucidates the backstory of Streep’s central character.

In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie returns home to announce, secretly, that she’s pregnant. That news isn’t kept under wraps for long (thanks to Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Colin Firth), but it does spark a lengthy flashback fixated on Streep’s Donna, who in the past is played by Lily James. Through that bygone storyline, fans will learn about the origins of Donna’s relationship with Brosnan’s Sam, Skarsgård’s Bill and Firth’s Harry — even as they also get to simultaneously learn more about the present-day circumstances of these characters, and in particular, Donna, who this initial promo suggests may now be…dead?

If such surprises are in store for audiences, they’re not spoiled here, although this Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again first-look does end by ruining the film’s biggest cameo (hi, Cher!). The film arrives next summer, but you can get a taste of its ABBA-scored craziness now via the above trailer.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will be released July 20, 2018.
