Netflix has released the first image of Helena Bonham-Carter in character as Princess Margaret for The Crown.

On Monday, the streaming site also shared a picture of Olivia Colman as the Queen in the forthcoming third series of the period drama. Tobias Menzies will star alongside Colman as the Queen's husband, Prince Philip.

Netflix confirmed in May that Bonham-Carter would be joining the cast of the show for its third and fourth series, which will follow the lives of the royal family through the Seventies and beyond.

The series is expected to focus on the breakdown of Princess Margaret's marriage to her then-husband Lord Snowdon, who will be played by Ben Daniels (House of Cards).

Bonham-Carter will take over the role from Vanessa Kirby, who received an Emmy nomination for her portayal of the Princess in the first and second series.

The Fight Club actress has previously aired her fears in taking on the role, she said: "I'm not sure which I'm more terrified about – doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby.

"The only thing I can guarantee is that I'll be shorter than Vanessa."

The Crown cast and characters

Earlier this year, the series became the subject of controversy after it emerged that Claire Foy, who had played the starring role of the Queen in the first and second series, was paid less than her co-star Matt Smith, who appeared as Prince Philip.

Foy was later paid £200,000 in backpay to rectify the issue. The show's producer Suzanne Mackie said: “Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen."
