Don’t think that Cardi B’s favorite piece from her Fashion Nova collaboration—a slick red leather alligator jacket—is actually alligator. It’s faux, so as Cardi B jokingly says over the phone: “PETA leave me the fuck alone!” And that is just one of 80 very Cardi B items from her fast-fashion capsule, which is fully dropping tomorrow. (She’s revealing it at midnight at a mini concert in Los Angeles; all the performers will be female and include DJ Carisma, DJ Duffey, Brianna Perry, Dreamdoll, Saweetie, and City Girls, or, as Cardi B puts it, “A whole lotta of vaginas.”) The collection has several standouts, like a faux leather biker jacket with exaggerated puffed sleeves and a long burgundy faux fur coat for a queenly effect.

For Cardi B, the inspiration was simple. “They are things that I see myself wearing, like in the ’60s and the ’70s,” she says. “I was thinking a lot about what would I wear in the falltime, like we have a lot of jackets, we have a lot dark colors, a lot of mustards, belting, a lot of blues. Nothing so bright. I love bright things but I was like, ‘I don’t think people want to wear a lot of bright shit in the wintertime.’ ” Those retro looks include a turtleneck and matching skirt—with a sassy thigh-high slit, too—striped in earthy browns and yellows, as well as a Soul Train–style patch-worked faux suede button-up shirt with larger-than-life chocolate-hue flares.

The collaboration has been in the works for several months and, in a way, was bound to happen. Cardi B has long worn Fashion Nova on her Instagram, unabashedly integrating it into her luxury wardrobe that includes plenty of Gucci and Moschino. Though, according to Cardi B, since day one, her collaboration has been about accessibility and looking good. “It’s very chic,” she says. “It’s really more of the things that I always wanted to wear but more affordable.”
