How the First Images From the Set of 'The Crown' Mimic Real-Life Royal History
Season 3 of The Crown began filming earlier this summer, and fans have been eager to see how the new actors-like Tobias Menzies, who is replacing Matt Smith in his role as Prince Philip-will fit into their roles. Viewers were especially excited to see Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret. And while we've seen Colman and Bonham Carter in released photos from Netflix, we've never seen the actresses on set together-until now.
In a new photo, Colman and Kirby are on set at Winchester Cathedral, filming what appears to be a funeral. They're both dressed in black coats and hats, which they accessorized with pearls. And as Hello! reports, while the scene was somber, the actresses were seen laughing and talking to each other between takes.
Seasons 3 and 4 of the show are filming back-to-back, according to Variety, and they will focus on the years 1964-76. The Daily Mail theorizes the funeral being filmed might be Winston Churchill's, as the former prime minister passed away in January of 1965.
Colman and Bonham Carter also bear a striking resemblance to their real-life counterparts, pictured here with Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 1968 on the way to the funeral of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent.
The actresses also resemble the colleagues they took over from. Claire Foy starred as Queen Elizabeth during the first two seasons of The Crown, while Vanessa Kirby played Princess Margaret.
The Crown Season 3 will premiere on Netflix in 2019.
