SAND LAND Beelzebub driving

Sand Land, the upcoming game from Bandai Namco based on the classic manga from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, isn’t out for a few months yet, but we’re starting to get more and more details about what the game’s about and how it plays. A new video released by the company has shown off the ins and outs of Sand Land’s gameplay, and it’s looking pretty interesting.

Bandai Namco calls Sand Land “an immersive and exciting action RPG,” which essentially just means you can run around and hit stuff. There’s a bit more to it than that, but that’s the gist of it, and the gameplay overview trailer does show exactly that.

We get to see a lot of very Toriyama characters in the trailer too, and the art style really makes them pop. It’s got a flat, cel-shaded style that looks just like an anime movie, or manga lifted right off the pages — and given its roots, that’s just about perfect.

Sand Land has a big, open world, and you’ll be able to explore just about every inch of it, either on foot or in a mecha vehicle. It does seem like vehicles are going to play a big part in the game, and in the trailer we see tank-like vehicles, more traditional trucks, and some cute little walkers, among many others.

Combat looks pretty solid too, with Beelzebub being able to beat up enemies with his fists and demonic powers, as well as sneak up on enemies and literally scare them to death. Of course, if there are mechs in the field, there are mechs in combat too, and you’ll be able to pull out a vehicle from your pocket – it’s stored in a capsule, like Dragon Ball – to fight and travel.

You’ll also be able to customize these mechs pretty extensively too, and it looks like there’s hundreds of different combinations. You can paint your mechs as well, so there’s plenty of customization to be had. It all looks pretty great.

Sand Land is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC on April 26, 2024.
