Cassandro - Official Trailer | Prime Video

The first full trailer for Roger Ross Williams’ upcoming biopic Cassandro, starring Gael García Bernal as the legendary exótico luchador, is here, it’s queer, and we can’t wait to see it!

Based on the true story, Cassandro follows Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who, with the help of his new manager, comes up with a character named Cassandro, who was known as “The Liberace of Lucha Libre.”

“In the process, he upends not just the macho wrestling world, but also his own life.”

While the trailer starts with Cassandro in his full glory, spinning around in the ring with fans chanting his name, it quickly turns back the clock to show us where he comes from.

“Mi papa, he introduced me to lucha libre,” Armendáriz tells Sabrina, the woman who will become his trainer. “Took me to a few matches.”

“You don’t see him no more?” she asks, to which he shakes his head “no.”

After years of working as a wrestler in Mexico as a rudo, or heel, Sabrina (Roberta Colindrez) suggests he try wrestling as an exótico, a wrestler who performs in drag and uses camp to contest the usual machismo of the wrestling world.

Then, as a Spanish-language version of “I Will Survive” plays, we meet Cassandro, the over-the-top, fabuloso, flirtatious, and beloved exótico.

The trailer also shows plenty of scenes with the character played by Bad Bunny, who seems to be the love interest of Armendáriz in the movie. At the beginning, he seems excited to learn that Armendáriz is a luchador, but as he gets more flamboyant and famous, and his private life becomes harder to hide, Bad Bunny’s character isn’t so happy anymore.
