First-ever cocktail championship to be held in Gaslamp Quarter

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — More than 20 bars and restaurants are entering one of their signature cocktails in the region’s first-ever cocktail championship later this month.

Guests are welcome to try any of or all 21 competing cocktails in the competition.

Participating businesses include The Grass Skirt in Pacific Beach, insideOUT in Hillcrest, Cococabana in Oceanside and 18 others.

10 themed bars to check out in San Diego County

The Grass Skirt is entering its popular “Captain’s Beach,” a concoction of Hendrick’s Gin, Drambuie, apple brandy, chicory and citrusy notes courtesy of cinnamon-spiced pineapple and lemon, topped off with evaporated milk.

Meanwhile, guests can also try the “Jaguar Verdita” created by the bartenders at Cococabana. A description of it on the contest’s website explains it as a “trip to Tulum in a cocktail glass,” fusing reposada and mango liqueur with Mexican green juice, called “verdita,” as a base. Verdita is usually made with pineapple juice, jalapeno and mint.

Looking for something a bit smokier? The Whiskey House in the Gaslamp Quarter will be entering their Glenfiddich Scotch Whisky-based cocktail, “You’re Smoking Hot” for a chance at the championship trophy. It’s mixed with chili-infused Aperol, vermouth and orange bitters.

You can find a full list with descriptions of each cocktail in the contest here.

The cocktail championship takes place at Rustic Root at 535 Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter on Sunday, April 28 from 1-6 p.m. Tickets range from $49-$79.
