Day One of Memphis In May Barbecue Cooking Contest

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s gonna get spicy in Memphis, as two separate barbecue contests kick off in the Bluff City.

Wednesday, the Memphis In May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is set to begin at Liberty Park. Over 100 teams from 22 states and four countries are competing to be named the World Champion.

This year marks the 46th edition of what USA Today calls the “most prestigious barbecue contest.”

Wednesday, attendees can watch the lighting of the grill, marking the opening of the cooking contest. The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., barbecue sauce wrestling will headline the night’s entertainment. The park will close at 10 p.m.

Thursday, attendees can enjoy demonstrations from legendary pitmasters and tours of competitors’ team spaces.

Thursday, the inaugural SmokeSlam barbecue contest is set to begin across town in Tom Lee Park on the river.

The event continues through the weekend with barbecue judging, events and music from St. Paul and the Broken Bones, War, Tone Loc, Young MC and more.
