The First Birds of Prey Trailer Is Everything I Wanted and More
Margot Robbie is reprising her 2016 Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn for the upcoming film Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. We've been patiently waiting for a look at the movie, and now I have good news: The official trailer is finally upon us. In it Harley Quinn has found a new squad—this time of all women—and they are taking on the very male-centered world of Gotham.
The film functions as a spin-off story for Quinn, in which she forms new partnerships outside of her bond with the Joker. Here she teams up with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to save a young woman.
Behind the scenes, the film is female-powered too: The director is Cathy Yang, and one of the main writers is Christina Hodson.
From the trailer, it's clear the creators are leaning on a colorful aesthetic that is a departure from the darker vibe of Suicide Squad, while mixing both comedy and drama. Robbie has previously said that the long, kind of silly title of the film is a hint at the tone. "It's not a very serious movie, so we thought the title should reflect that," Robbie explained, according to Movie Fone. "Like, Birds of Prey makes it sound very serious, and [the subtitle is] kind of like Harley adding her, like, 'Hey, don't worry. I'm in this too.'"
Back in April, Robbie shared a picture of herself on the set and revealed that production had wrapped. Earlier this month she shared a poster of the film with the release date.
