Fire Hazard Forces Recall of Over 60,000 Bissell Cordless Multi-Surface Vacuums
At least one injury has been confirmed.
Bissell users, beware! Certain cordless, wet-dry models of their vacuum cleaners pose a serious fire risk.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of affected units today, Jan. 12, with 61,000 or so affected in the United States and about 4,300 in Canada.
There have been 66 confirmed cases of the vacuum either visibly smoking or emitting a smokey smell, with five of them catching fire, three causing minor property damage, and one resulting in a burn injury.
Bissell Cordless Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum models 2551, 2551W and 25519 are included in the recall, with reports stating that the circuit board inside the vacuum’s battery pack can overheat, causing it to smoke and risking ignition. If you're unsure which model you have, the number is visible when the clean water tank has been removed from the unit.
Impacted vacuums were sold through Bissell, Walmart, QVC, Amazon, Costco, Ace Hardware, Kohls, Wayfair, and Fingerhut from January 2019 through November 2022, retailing at about $360. Consumers with affected models should stop using them immediately and contact Bissell for a free replacement battery pack, which can be swapped in-store at a local authorized service center or in-home by an authorized technician.
Other recent recalls include all Fisher-Price Rock ’n Play Sleepers and children's weighted blankets from Target.
