Fire breaks out at London primary school a day before children due to return after summer

Firefighters are tackling a blaze that broke out at a primary school in east London.

The blaze started the day before pupils were due to return after the summer holidays.

The fire broke out at Roding Primary School on Hewett Road in Dagenham.

A total of 12 fire engines and about 80 firefighters were called to the fire at 4.50am on Tuesday and up to half of the single-storey building was alight at 6.30am.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said the cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

No injuries have been reported.

The school is closed for the summer holidays but pupils had been due to return on Wednesday.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters have been called to a fire at a school on Hewett Road in Dagenham.

“Around half of the single-storey building is currently alight.

“The Brigade was called at 4.50am and fire crews from Dagenham, Barking, Ilford and surrounding fire stations are attending the incident.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”

The Metropolitan Police said road closures had been put in place and that there were no reported injuries.

The school is one of the biggest primary schools in the country, with more than 500 pupils.
