Fiona Stiles Shared the Cutest Way to Separate Dirty and Clean Makeup Brushes
For those of us that like to collect (or, more accurately, hoard) makeup brushes, washing all of them can be a dreaded task. Even separating the ones that need to be cleaned from the ones that don't can take nearly as long as the brush washing itself — the whole process requires us to block time off of our calendars. Luckily, Fiona Stiles, a makeup artist who undoubtedly has an impressive collection of brushes, just shared a trick for keeping the dirty separated from the clean. It's cute, simple, and will cut down your brush organizing and cleaning time considerably.
"My old brush bags were falling apart so I stitched myself up some new ones," Stiles shared to Instagram on May 11 with a video of two fabric drawstring bags, where she now stores her makeup brushes. "I used a @miumiu purse dust bag and a @cosstores shoe dust bag because they had drawstrings and I like the nice cotton they’re made of."
Both bags are embroidered with hand-stitched lettering — one is labeled "dirty" in baby-blue thread, and the other is labeled "clean" in pastel pink. And yes — Stiles designed those herself. "I’ve always loved needlework but I never have the time to do it," she continues in the post's caption. "I like how meditative it is."
You might not be a professional makeup artist who needs to clean brushes after every single use, but you can benefit a whole lot from storing away your brushes that have been used one too many times. According to fellow makeup artist Ashleigh Ciucci, cleaning dirty brushes regularly can help extend their lifespan. Plus, "If your brushes are dirty, your application will be spotty and blending will be difficult."
So if you've got a spare dust bag lying around the house, take a page from Stiles's book and make your own designated dirty brush bag — that way, they're out of sight and out of mind until wash day.
