Since 1929, design professionals have flocked to Scalamandré for its bold-yet-elegant textiles. Whether you've seen their infamous zebra print in vintage photos of Gino's or in the home of your favorite designer, you're no doubt familiar. The brand is known in the trade as a maximalist powerhouse, bringing life to bland walls for interiors around the world. Today, its is turning a page and sharing its textiles beyond walls and the trade industry with RED, Scalamandré's first-ever online retail space for wallcoverings, fabric, and furniture!

"RED From Scalamandré's first furniture collection marks an exciting expansion for our company, allowing customers to delve into our archives and shop some of our most celebrated and iconic fabrics," explains CEO Louis Renzo.

Made in collaboration with the trailblazing, made-to-order furniture brand Cloth & Company, Scalamandré's collection is a feast for the history-obsessed design connoisseur. Shoppers will find fabulous textiles reimagined in a linen/cotton blend on benches, settees, room dividers, ottomans, platform beds, office chairs and more.

"The House of Scalamandré’s iconic designs have proven they can stand the test of time," says Meganne Wecker, founder of Cloth & Company and President and CCO Skyline Furniture. "While our brands share a deep history, we also share a vision for the future. Together our collection excels with the delicate balancing act of meeting the demand for innovation while upholding tradition."

While this chapter in Scalamandré's legacy is new and exciting territory, the brand has remained true to its identity by honoring iconic textiles through archive research of 1940 to 1990 led by Design Director Sumitra Mattai. The line spans over historical reference points for the designs like the graphic 1940s Zebra or the romantic 1980s Countryside Toile.

"I knew I wanted to shop our archives and bring out some patterns you haven't seen in a long time," Mattai explains. "I spent hours there (as our archives are not digitized) to tumble through boxes until we honed in on our selections. The zebra print has been canonized as a cult classic amongst inerior designers so that was a huge starting point for me."

The resulting designs are fresh and youthful, blooming from the roots of Scandamandré's impressive design history. Mindful of what textiles would suit which furniture frame, Mattai chose 12 prints in various colorways that complement the 12 silhouettes in the collection to make ever maximalists feel right at home. For the minimalists, she paired luxurious solid fabrics in velvet, bouclé, and linen, but suggests going for a layered look to add personality. If you have a neutral office space, take a step into the life filled with color—at least to give your eyes a break from your screen!

"It was really cool watching wallpapers take on a new life on the renderings and frames," Mattai says. "Something pyschedlic like the Koi fish or a print with a large scale like Cabbage Rose can look really intense, but with a few edits, they were able to pop like the original design."

Outside of the zebra print, the majority of the textiles in the collection have not been available to a consumer audience, so there are plenty of pieces to fall in love with for the first time. Finally, Scalamandré fans can experience a closer look without hiring an expert to do so.
