Everything We Know About 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' Adaptation

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo movie is in the works at Netflix!

There's no word yet on who will play star Evelyn Hugo, but the film has found its writer and director. Leslye Headland will direct, and Liz Tigelaar wrote a script based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel. Jenkins Reid is one of the executive producers on the movie.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows the tale of "aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?" Throughout the story, Evelyn tells Monique the tale of her life, career, and love affairs.

Jessica Chastain has long been a fan-favorite to play Celia St. James, a red-haired actress who has a relationship with Evelyn. In December, however, she shut the speculation down, telling E! News there's "zero possibility" she'll be in the film. She added, "I look forward to watching it, and I’m sorry to disappoint everyone out there."

This is the second of Jenkins Reid's novels to get the big screen treatment. The first, Daisy Jones & the Six, was a ten episode TV show that aired on Prime Video this past March. Four of her novels take place within the same universe; so the events of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo happen in the same world as Daisy Jones, Malibu Rising, and Carrie Soto is Back, but as Netflix and Prime Video are entirely different entities, it's unlikely any of the Daisy Jones cast would reprise their roles for the Evelyn Hugo film. In addition, there's a TV adaptation of Malibu Rising in the works at Hulu.

"We're in development on it and we want to make sure that it's as good as this one is," Reid told ET about the Evelyn Hugo film comparing to the success of the Daisy Jones show. "Everything that is happening so far is going really well."
