'Mindhunter' Season 2 Is Finally Coming to Netflix This Friday
Mindhunter season 2 will premiere on Netflix on August 16.
In season 2, the Mindhunter cast will feature some new actors, including Damon Herriman as Charles Manson.
Season 2 will also focus on the Atlanta Child Murders, Son of Sam, and the BTK Killer.
Netflix's original crime series Mindhunter was an instant hit when it premiered on the streaming service back in October 2017, and as a result, it was quickly renewed for a second season. Fans were left to anxiously await the show's return for more than a year and a half after that, but now, Mindhunter is finally returning. Here's a look at everything we know about the show's second season so far.
When is season 2 coming to Netflix?
Earlier this summer, Netflix finally confirmed that Mindhunter season 2 will drop on August 16. Since then, the streaming service has also released a bone-chilling trailer for those looking to get a taste of what season 2 has to offer:

How many episodes will season 2 have?
Season 2 will have nine brand new episodes, TV Guide reports. This means the second season will be slightly shorter than the first, which had 10 episodes. Bummer.
The good news: In a May interview with Vulture, former FBI agent John E. Douglas (who the show is loosely based on) said that the show is supposed to have a "five-year arc," which means we've definitely got more to come after season 2.
Will anyone new be joining the Mindhunter cast?
Yes — back in August 2018, Collider reported that the show's creators had cast actor Damon Herriman as the notorious Charles Manson. Coincidentally, Damon also plays Charles Manson in Quentin Tarantino's newly released film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood though Damon says he never talked about Mindhunter with the famed director during filming.
"He knew that I'd done it," Damon told IndieWire last month. "It would have been weird to keep that a secret. But it didn't come up much."
Aside from newcomers like Damon, you can expect to see your favorite first season cast members return for season 2. Jonathan Groff will reprise his role as Holden Ford, Holt McCallany will be back as Bill Tench, and Anna Torv will return as Wendy Carr. Also confirmed to return, according to the new trailer: Cameron Britton, who played serial killer Ed Kemper in season 1, and Joe Tuttle, who played the team's newest FBI agent Gregg Smith in season 1.
Are there any season 2 spoilers?
During a July interview on KCRW's The Treatment podcast, executive producer David Fincher finally spilled some details on Mindhunter season 2. While the show's first season was set in 1977, when criminal profiling and serial killer psychology were still new and misunderstood fields, the second season takes place a couple of years later, when public interest in serial killers dramatically increased.
"In the '70s, post-Manson, post-Son of Sam, post-Zodiac, there really was ... I don't think you can say it was an epidemic, but there was definitely the feeling that the notion of this has gotten away from us," he said. "When I left the Bay Area in the mid-1970s and our parents moved to Oregon, you go 300 miles north and nobody talked about [the Zodiac Killer]. It had been this festering thing that had never been brought to any kind of closure but no one cared about it [outside of the Bay Area]. Then Son of Sam came, and it was Newsweek and Time — the cover."
This sentiment is echoed in the first trailer for season 2, which shows the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit "expanding" beyond the basement at Quantico.
The trailer also confirms that Mindhunter season 2 will focus largely on the Atlanta Child Murders of the late '70s and early '80s. New York-based serial killer David Berkowitz, a.k.a. Son of Sam, and the BTK Killer (played by Sonny Valicenti in short clips spliced throughout the first season) will make appearances as well, the trailer shows.
Serial killers aside, there will also be some personal drama in season 2: An eagle-eyed writer at Entertainment Weekly spotted photos of Bill's wife, Nancy (played by Stacey Roca), and their son on an interactive press site for the show, indicating that the Tenchs' family issues will continue. Actress Lauren Glazier also appeared in the photos, seeming to be a new love interest for Wendy.
For now, those seem to be all the season 2 details that Mindhunter fans are privy to. Douglas and his former partner at the FBI, Robert K. Ressler, were pioneers in criminal profiling and the study of serial killers ("serial killer" is a term that Ressler himself is often credited with coining), and the book has served as a main source of inspiration for the show.
